Ear Wax Removal
Ear wax is an essential part of your body's way of protecting the ear. So, how do you know when you need to come for ear wax removal?
Are You Experiencing Discomfort or Hearing Challenges Due to Earwax?
Ear wax is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It plays a vital role in protecting and cleaning our ears. However, excessive wax build-up can cause discomfort or temporary hearing problems.
When Earwax Becomes a Problem
While earwax is beneficial, excessive build-up can lead to:
- Muffled hearing
- A feeling of fullness in your ears
- Pain & discomfort
- Tinnitus

Understanding Earwax
Earwax has several important jobs. It moisturises the skin in the ear canal to stop dryness and itching. It also helps protect against infections because of its antibacterial properties. Additionally, earwax traps dust and other particles to keep them out of your ear. The ear is self-cleaning, and for most people, no routine maintenance is required.
When to Seek Professional Help
You should consider booking an appointment if you experience:
- Persistent ear discomfort
- Sudden or partial hearing loss
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Itching or odour from the ear canal
Earwax Removal at Hoffman Audiology
During your visit, our experienced audiologists will perform an otoscopic examination, which is a visual check of the ear canal and the ear drum. This helps confirm if there is any wax blocking the ear. They will also decide the best way to remove it.
We primarily use ear irrigation for wax removal. This method involves inserting an applicator into the ears and flushing out the excess earwax. In the event of previous ear surgeries, or more complicated cases with higher risk, we may recommend having excessive wax removed via micro-suctioning at the Ear, Nose & Throat Surgeon (ENT).
Important: Never attempt to remove earwax at home using cotton swabs, hairpins, or similar objects. These can push wax further into the canal, causing impaction or injury. PS this includes ear candling….
