Our Services
If you’ve noticed that your child is easily distracted, struggles to focus, or has difficulty in noisy environments (like a classroom, a car or a restaurant), it may be time to consider an evaluation for APD.
Auditory Processing Disorder
Wondering if your child shows signs of an Auditory Processing Disorder?
Auditory processing refers to how our brain interprets and processes the sounds we hear. When this process is impaired, it can affect a child's ability to respond effectively in various situations. Many children experience challenges related to auditory processing, leading to behaviours that may indicate an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD).
Evaluation for Auditory Processing Disorder
To determine if your child has Auditory Processing Disorder, they should undergo a thorough evaluation in a sound-treated room. This evaluation should be conducted by a trained and qualified audiologist.
There are widely used standard international questionnaires that can help identify possible signs of APD. However, a formal diagnosis of APD requires a detailed assessment of auditory processing skills.
Please fill out our short questionnaire to receive more information on whether you may need a diagnostic assessment. This will not provide a diagnosis, but will help us guide you accordingly. If your child's teacher, speech therapist, doctor, or occupational therapist suggests an APD assessment, you can call us to schedule an appointment.

Does your child seem distracted or lacking concentration?
Does your child have difficulty hearing in a noisy environment?
Does it appear as if your child can't hear at times?
Does your child have difficulty following instructions?
Does your child have difficulty with reading and writing?
Does your child seem to have difficulty recognising subtle differences in sounds in words?
Does it seem as if your child doesn't listen properly?

After the Evaluation
Once a diagnostic assessment has been conducted, you will gain insight into whether your child presents with an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). Most importantly, the auditory processing disorders may present themselves in different ways. Therefore, it is critical that after identifying the presence of auditory processing difficulties, that we further specify what type of processing disorder a person has, so that intervention is effective.
A multidisciplinary team approach is critical for conducting a thorough assessment of the various challenges faced by children with APD. Our collaborative method involves practitioners from different fields, including:
- Speech-Language Pathologists: They assess communication skills and language comprehension. Does the challenge with processing stem from delayed expressive or receptive language?
- Psychologists: They evaluate cognitive and behavioural aspects that may impact auditory processing. Does the challenge with processing originate from personality or learning difficulties?
- Educators: They provide insights into your child's performance and behaviour in academic settings. Has the challenge with processing led to academic challenges that require attention to the academic setting of the child?
This collaborative process gathers comprehensive information about your child's strengths and weaknesses, allowing for a holistic approach to their auditory processing challenges.
Diagnosis of Auditory Processing Disorder
While the insights provided by this multidisciplinary team are invaluable, it's important to note that the tools used in these evaluations are not definitive diagnostic instruments for APD. The official diagnosis of Auditory Processing Disorder can only be made by a qualified audiologist. This ensures that the evaluation is accurate and that any underlying hearing issues are properly identified and addressed.
