Why Do We Test Hearing?

We test hearing to assess the impact of hearing loss on communication and identify effective solutions to overcome communication barriers. By understanding the nature and extent of hearing impairment, we ensure that individuals of all ages can continue living life to the fullest and maintain their cognitive health.

How Do We Test Hearing?

Hearing tests are conducted in a sound-treated booth using state-of-the-art equipment to accurately diagnose hearing loss. We use a wide variety of testing methodologies in order to obtain accurate results, including pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry in quiet and noise, as well as impedance testing, to evaluate hearing acuity and the overall health of your entire auditory system. If hearing loss is detected, we provide comprehensive recommendations for the treatment of the hearing loss, which may include referrals for medical treatment, assistive hearing devices, or implantable options, based on the test results.

How Long Does a Hearing Test Take?

Most hearing assessments are designed to fit into your busy schedule, typically lasting about 30 minutes.

Who Needs a Hearing Assessment?

Everyone! Hearing assessments are for all ages—newborns, children, adults, and seniors alike. Hearing health is important for everyone, not just the elderly or those exposed to loud environments. If you have ears, it’s vital to get your hearing annually assessed.

When Should Hearing Be Assessed?

  • At Birth: Newborn hearing screening is crucial to identify any potential issues early.
  • Annually: Regular hearing checks are recommended throughout life to monitor any changes.
  • Regularly for At-Risk Individuals: If you or your loved ones have conditions known to affect hearing or exhibit signs of hearing loss, follow-up assessments will be recommended based on individual needs.

Specialised Testing for Children

Testing children’s hearing requires specialised methods tailored to their developmental stages:

Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA)

  • Ideal for infants and toddlers aged 6 months to 2.5 years.
  • Involves behavioural conditioning, where children are trained to look towards lighted toys as a response to sounds.

Conditioned Play Audiometry (CPA)

  • Designed for toddlers and preschoolers aged 2 to 5 years.
  • Children listen for sounds and respond by performing playful tasks, like placing blocks in a bucket when they hear a beep.

Pure Tone Audiometry

  • Ideal for infants and toddlers aged 6 months to 2.5 years.
  • Involves behavioural conditioning, where children are trained to look towards lighted toys as a response to sounds.

Advanced Audiology: ABRs and OAEs

  • Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR): Used to assess the function of the cochlea and auditory pathways in children or individuals who cannot undergo standard testing.
  • Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE): Primarily used for infants and children, this test evaluates the inner ear's response to sound and helps determine hearing ability.
