Balance Assessment and Rehabilitation

Are You Experiencing Dizziness, Vertigo or Balance Problems?

If you’ve been feeling unsteady or dizzy, you’re not alone. Our comprehensive balance assessments, including Videonystagmography (VNG), evaluate the health of your vestibular system—the crucial component of your inner ear responsible for balance—alongside your central motor function. By identifying the underlying causes of vertigo, dizziness, or balance challenges, we can provide targeted and effective treatment to improve your quality of life.

Why Are Balance Assessments Important?

To better understand your balance issues, we ask a series of questions to gauge the severity and impact on your daily life:

If you answered “yes” to several of these questions, it’s crucial to pursue a balance assessment.

    • Does looking up increase your problem?

    • Do you feel frustrated because of your balance issues?

    • Do you restrict your travel for business or pleasure due to these problems?

    • Does walking down the aisle of a supermarket exacerbate your issues?

    • Do you have difficulty getting in and out of bed because of your balance concerns?

    • Does your condition significantly limit your participation in social activities, such as dinner outings, movies, dancing, or parties?

    • Do you struggle with reading due to your balance problems?

    • Are more ambitious activities like sports, dancing, or household chores difficult for you?

    • Do you feel hesitant to leave your home without someone accompanying you?

    • Have you been embarrassed in front of others because of your issues?

    • Do quick head movements worsen your balance problems?

    • Do you avoid heights due to these concerns?

    • Does turning over in bed increase your symptoms?

    • Is strenuous housework or yard work challenging because of your balance issues?

    • Are you worried that people may think you are intoxicated due to your problems?

    • Is it challenging for you to walk alone?

    • Does walking down sidewalks aggravate your condition?

    • Do you find it difficult to concentrate because of your balance issues?

    • Is walking around your home in the dark problematic?

    • Do you fear staying home alone due to your symptoms

    • Do you feel handicapped by your balance issues?

    • Has your condition caused stress in your relationships?

    • Are you experiencing symptoms of depression related to your balance problems?

    • Does your condition interfere with your job or household responsibilities?

    • Does bending over exacerbate your issues?

What to Expect During Your Assessment

Our balance assessments typically last about 90 minutes. During this time, you will undergo various tests, including Videonystagmography (VNG), Caloric Irrigation, Dynamic Visual Acuity testing, Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP) and Electrocochleography (EcochG), to measure eye movements and assess your vestibular function. These tests help us pinpoint specific balance pathologies and develop a tailored treatment plan just for you.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy

After your comprehensive assessment, we offer vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT). VRT is a specialised form of therapy designed to improve balance and reduce dizziness through targeted exercises that promote vestibular system function. Our skilled audiologists will guide you through exercises aimed at overcoming dizziness and treating your balance issues, helping you regain confidence in your daily activities. You are also sent home with a home programme with exercises to do on your own.
